It's Not an Easy Job!
By Paul Houghton

I have just returned from the Slovenian GP, I went along with friend and referee Chris Durno as well as his fellow referee Dave Watters and trainee ref John Homer - not forgetting mad catholic Kevin Peterson.

I always watch the meetings with interest but had my opinions changed on how to look at racing incidents and some of the things riders do at the tapes. It really did make me think that the men in the box do not have an easy life, when you get a decision against your team it's "yell at the ref time", not now after this weekend!

I would have excluded Crumpie when Dryml came off but after listening to another opinion I was proved wrong as Dryml was going out into the dirt and Crumpie drove inside & startled Dryml who dropped it. A Dryml exclusion was the correct call.

It was a top weekend which I thoroughly enjoyed, meeting people & watching speedway on a proper track.

Thanks to Chris for sorting all my travel arrangements, ferrying me about and restoring my faith in human nature, I look forward to the next trip.

Please remember not to give the boys in the box a hard time, its not an easy job, believe me!

  • Terry Homer:

"John Homer was my father, he passed away in 2001. I have fond memories of attending meets and having a great view from the box."
