A Matter of Opinion....Tony Stanley....08/09/2002

Tony is a Workington Comets fan.

The Comets seem no nearer winning a league title - will they ever do it?

Yes I think so. We've been so unlucky with injuries over the years that we've never been able to make as strong a challenge as we should. Even this year six of our seven riders have had been out injured at some stage. Ian Thomas always puts together a strong side and we'll get it right one year.

The Grand Prix series has been extended to 10 rounds - is it working?

I preferred it as a six round series. It seems a little drawn out this year and there's real potential that some years it could be decided well before the final round. That probably won't be the case this year but it's obviously much more likely to happen over 10 rounds than 6. It's also impacting British Speedway quite badly now and we're losing the continuity we need.

Who will win this year's Premier League?

The Islanders and it will be well deserved. They are a strong side with an excellent heatleader trio and they're always entertaining to watch. If they do win it then I'll be especially pleased for Danny Bird as he's a smashing lad. If the Islanders win it that also means that Berwick haven't - which is nice!.

What do you think of the Sky coverage this year?

Not as good as it was. The new girl in the pits has as much personality as a goldfish and Tony Millard's repetitive commentary is wearing a bit thing - what exactly does 'The battle is joined' mean anyway? On the plus side they are showing a bit more of the Premier League and they've introduced the well-informed Nigel Pearson as a commentator.

Workington don't have any kind of website - Would you care to speculate on the reasons behind this?

I suspect that there is a degree of mistrust from certain individuals. There have been various attempts to run one but they always mysteriously disappear - I guess it's just not worth the hassle for the individuals involved. I wish we had one actually.
