A Matter of Opinion....Lawrence Hughes....14/04/2002

Lawrence is an armchair fan of Speedway. He admits that he's never seen a meeting live but he enjoys watching the Sky Sports coverage.

When did you first become aware of Speedway ?

I think I've probably always been aware of it, I just didn't pay it much attention until five of six years ago.

What first attracted you to the sport ?

I'm keen on all sports, particularly football, and tend to watch pretty much everything on Sky Sports. Initially I watched Speedway just because it was on, after watching a few meetings I found I liked it rather more than I thought I did. The Grand Prix series is particularly addictive as so much can change in just 60 seconds of action.

Any favourite riders ?

Rickardsson and Crump are both fantastic riders and I love watching Carl Stonehewer and Leigh Adams.

Do you find it difficult to keep in touch with the sport ?

I did until comparatively recently. There never seems to be very much in the papers but I keep an eye on the teletext. Now that I'm connected to the internet it has become much easier.

Would you like to actually visit a stadium to watch a meeting live ?

I'd like to but both my age and my geographical location count against me. If I were a younger man I'd love to visit a few tracks but I'm happy enough watching it on the television.
