A Matter of Opinion....Brian Smith....07/06/2003

Brian was a Scunthorpe fan in their days at Quibell Park and Ashby Ville.

This year has seen a Scunthorpe team take to the track for the first time since 1985. How does this make you feel ?
Even though they carry the name of Scunthorpe it is very hard to grasp they are our team, also with them riding home meetings at Hull makes it hard to believe.
How optimistic are you that the team will ever race in a new stadium ?
If it is left up to the council I dont believe they will ever provide ground for a motorsport venue, the Conservatives have just taken control of our local council. If it is left to the promoter then I believe he will try to find a site and we will have racing maybe in 2004.
You used to be good friends to the riders - any particular fond memories of those times ?
During my time supporting the saints/stags I made many friends, in fact I have been friends of Andy Hines/ Colin Cooks mechanic for 27 years now and in fact he was my best man when I got married in 1983, probably the best friend who I got to know was Ken McKinlay (god rest his soul) who would tell of stories from his earlier racing antics.
What do you feel are the most significant changes in the sport since the Stags last raced ?
Lay down engines, Shale deflectors, Conference league, Grand Prix, and a lack of team riding
What advice would you give to the prospective promoters of the new Scunthorpe track ?
Beware of too many hangers on, prepare an excellent racing strip, have some covered accomodation for supporters and probably a bar, don't let the council interfere with your business.
