Dream Team : Andy Freegard

Andy selects his nightmare Swindon side

Leonard Raba
Pole who joined in 1978. Sensational gater but unfortunately kept forgetting to turn left.

Jerzy Trzeszkowski
Brought in the same time as Raba. Was an ex world finalist(about 20 years earlier) but must have been knocking 40 by the time he set Blunsdon alight. Signed on the recommendation of Jan Andersson..Cheers!!

Frank Richt
Rode the princely sum of 1 match..very slowly!!. Had the 'neck' to complain about not getting a van as part of his deal. Could have rode his bike to meetings without breaking the speed limit!

Milan Spinka
Was fine in his first spell, but Richard Vowles decided to bring him back in '83 as a 'solid 6 point man'. Ended up nearer to .6 and was often replaced after only 1 ride. Had an old Merc that was always 'chocka' with empty fag packets and covered in tea stains..Top Man.

Lennart Bengtsson
Another 'bright foreign prospect'!! simply, simply dreadful. Also rode for Sheffield with equal success.

Sumner Mcknight
Barry Briggs' American mate. had strange plastic wheels on his bike and superb sideburns...oh and no points!!

Veijo Tuoriniemi
Gilt edged prospect whilst at Eastbourne...Wally Mawdsley soon sorted that out. Beat absolutely nobody, home or away, We sure know how to pick 'em!!

Close but no cigar to....Jarno Kosonen, Kevin Pope, Martin Satchell, Darryl Simpson, Melvyn Soffe, Billy Wall and Bob Valentine

  • Frank Richt:

"Dear Andy Freegard. Had the "neck" to complain about a van.... get real!!!!!!!!! As you know nothing at all about any agreements between myself and Swindon, I would hope that not too many things would or should be written about this. Nobody was interested about my side of the story at the time. Maybe the promotors do not have to keep to their agreements... but I do not think that that is helping the sport in the UK at all. Or maybe a written contract means nothing when riding for Swindon.

I love speedway, as a lot of people, and yes I did not ride that well this meeting on borrowed bikes that keeping breaking down.... but nobody cares about that do they.... but as seen as Swindon at this time did not keep their promise, I did not ride for Swindon again sadly enough as I wanted to improve my riding on British soil as well as on Swedish. From a guy who still loves Speedway more than most, and was not glad about being "f*cked" by promoters thinking only of cash in their hands."

  • Kevin Pope:

"Who is Andy Freegard? What has he done?"
